Artist: Ferdinando Ongania (1842-1911), a publisher and bookseller best known for publishing the monumental edition Basilica San Marco.  Calli e Canali (streets and canals) of Venice was undertaken by him to record the architecture of his beloved city and became one of his masterpieces. Ongania published more than 170 books, mainly about Venice. He was particularly significant for using the latest photographic techniques to create facsimile editions and reproductions of great Venetian artworks. He published out of his antique shop and gallery on Piazza San Marco, which catered to an international clientele. (Source: Wikipedia)

Description: Street and canals of Venice. Photogravure on paper. Professionally framed and matted by Michael’s Canada using TruGuard UV protection glass. Paper has a creamy colour and the picture is in different tones of sepia. This is a hand-pulled photogravure; every print is inked and pulled by hand on a flat-bed press, and therefore each print is subtly unique, and it can be identified from other processes under 15-20 times magnification. Condition: Print in fine condition, no visible blemishes. Frame and mat in very good condition.

Measurements: Frame measures 23 ¾ x 17 inches. Artwork measures 15 x 11 1/4 (inside the mat)
